IV in Outdoor Recreation.....
"Our
commitment is to provide high quality graduates in outdoor education leadership
and technical skill training to meet the needs of employers in the outdoor profession.
Our course is designed to meet the needs of people committed to a career in the
outdoor profession while allowing opportunities for employment throughout the
study program." The
outdoor profession provides a wide range of employment opportunities including
outdoor education, outdoor recreation and adventure guiding. This course is designed
to prepare people for employment in these fields of endeavour. The
course is structured to allow students to undertake employment during the peak
employment season for the outdoor profession (February to May and then October
to December). The greater part of the course will be conducted in an intensive
period between May and September inclusive. We
begin the course in January with the fundamentals of wilderness first aid and
foundational technical training in preparation for students to gain employment
in the busy employment months at the beginning of the year. This also ensures
that everyone understands the basics before moving on to more complex course and
work challenges. As the course progresses, new and more sophisticated skills are
taught sequentially. The program is intensive as there's a lot to learn in a short
time. The program is designed to ensure the theory components of the course inform
practice in the filed. The practical aspects of the program are supported with
course notes, theory blocks, workshops and ongoing evaluations.
You
will develop judgement, technical skills and prudent safety standards, as well
as the interpersonal skills required to teach and lead others in the outdoors.
You will also gain new found confidence for your own future adventures. The
majority of our instruction is hands on - learning by doing. Learning is always
immediately relevant. You'll learn how to climb by climbing, learn how to paddle
while undertaking extended journeys on rivers and lakes, learn how to facilitate
an adventure based learning environment, and learn about yourself and the natural
world through the sum of such experiences. Then, in turn, you will be able to
share your expertise with others and guide them within a safe, enjoyable and educational
outdoor experience. All
activities are sequential, starting with basics, then building until a Certificate
IV level of competence is achieved. The activity specialisations offered in this
course include bushwalking, roping and canoeing. Cross-country skiing and white
water rafting are offered as electives at an additional cost to the student. Additional
Study Opportunities The
course provides the option of entry to further study on completion. On completion
of the Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation you may be able to continue into a
Diploma of Outdoor Recreation at Swinburne University, delivered by The Outdoor
Education Group in Victoria. On
completion of the Diploma in Outdoor Recreation you may also be able to transfer
into a second or third year of a Bachelor of Education program at several universities
(depending on pre-requisite requirements). La Trobe University is able to fast
track Diploma of Outdoor Recreation graduates through its Bachelor of Arts (Outdoor
Education) or Bachelor of Arts (Outdoor Recreation) degrees. In most cases, this
will enable students to complete the degree in a further two years. This is important
for those students interested in continuing with a Graduate Diploma of Education
in order to gain registration as a teacher.
