The Lithgow College’s Diploma in Outdoor Recreation is designed to offer a stream-lined qualification pathway that incorporates recognition of current competency and/or prior learning and targeted professional training for suitably experienced applicants.
The Diploma in Outdoor Recreation is the preferred qualification required to work as an outdoor professional in middle and senior management roles, such as client services, operations, staffing and human resources, programming and executive administration in outdoor organisations.

The course incorporates a combination of theory based classes, technical skill training and industry based work experience. It is designed to:
1. Acknowledge the current skills and experience in a senior leadership or management role in the outdoor profession through a seamless recognition process.
2. Provide a flexible work based training to complete identified skill or knowledge based gaps required for completion of the Diploma of Outdoor Recreation.
3. Provide high quality technical training in a range of skill specialisations if required. | |
The Diploma of Outdoor Recreation focuses on developing advanced leadership and management skills relevant to the outdoor industry. The theoretical component of the course covers important topics such as advanced program planning, instruction and administration, program logistics, risk management, advanced business skills for the outdoor profession, client relationship management and project management. Activity specialisations delivered as part of your enrolment include advanced bushwalking, adventure based learning, abseiling and climbing. Additional activity specialisations can be accredited via recognition from alternate Registered Training Providers (RTOs).
Industry Experience:
The course assumes significant work based experience or current competence at senior instructional or management levels related to the outdoor industry. This is a critical and compulsory requirement of the program.
Thus the delivery model enables students to either:
1. Continue to work with their current employer while completing this course; and/or,
2. Gain the required outdoor related industry experience for course completion
Course Duration:
The course is designed to be completed in a 6 - 12 month period (based on current skills and experience). Suitably qualified and experienced students can complete this qualification in a shorter period of time.
Course Cost: $654 per semester – TAFE NSW 2012 fee rates (it is anticipated that suitably qualified and experienced outdoor professionals should be able to complete in one semester).
