The Outdoor Education Group - Outdoor Education and Training

International Students .....

There are several year long accredited study options for outdoor recreation within TAFE NSW Western Institute.

We will be accepting applications for the 2009 intake in the near future!!!

All applications must be made through TAFE International Students page.

The courses offered in 2009 are:

The Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation is based at Lithgow College. This course is aimed at preparing students to work as an assistant guide or assistant leader in the outdoors at the completion of their course. You will learn group facilitation skills, advanced communication skills, outdoor logistical and risk management skills.

You will also develop practical skills in advanced first aid and safety, bushwalking and navigation, abseiling and climbing, flat water canoeing and adventure based learning.

Students undertaking this course should posses some limited or basic skills in outdoor activities and environments or a desire to become an accredited outdoor leader.

Outdoor Education and Training - International Students

The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation based at Moss Vale in NSW

This course focuses on preparing committed people to undertake outdoor recreation, outdoor education and adventure guiding opportunities in this growing sector of the recreation industry. Skills learned are advanced bushwalking, flat water canoeing, low and high ropes, rock climbing, swift water rescue and wilderness first aid. Cross-country skiing and white water rafting are elective options (available at an additional cost). Training is provided by experienced instructors in each field of expertise, within a classroom and practical learning framework, designed to ensure theory supports and informs practice throughout the year. A variety of work placement experiences in additional to this discretionary work option are a critical and compulsory requirement of the program.

Students wishing to undertake this course will require some advanced outdoor technical skills in a number of disciplines.

We will organise mandatory work placement that may be paid or unpaid. International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the course semester and full-time during their vacation. After enrolling in TAFE NSW, you may apply to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) for a Student Visa with Permission to Work.
