First
Year Program - Canyon/Canoe/Climb
Program
Overview
This first-year TVET Outdoor Recreation program
focuses on the 3 activity specialisations of canyoning,
climbing and canoeing and is tied together with
3 core/stream units (see table below). Students
are trained and assessed in all 6 units together
with skills that include teamwork, communication,
leadership and risk management. Each day, 2 students
are nominated as leaders to lead and facilitate
the group (under TAFE teacher guidance and supervision)
through its various activities. In this manner,
a small team is created that lives and works together
on the program.
The
program starts and finished from Lithgow TAFE.
The Greater Blue Mountains area, listed as World
Heritage by UNESCO in 2000 is the primary venue
used for this program, with visits to fragile,
beautiful canyons and spectacular rock climbing
cliffs. Boronia Waters, Nepean River and Lake Lyell provide excellent overnight canoe
journeys for students. |
